Tropical Cyclone Wind Estimation Using Synthetic Aperture Radar

چکیده

We have investigated various SAR images of tropical cyclones, which were acquired by the SAR aboard the satellites ENVISAT and RADARSAT-1 at different polarizations and incidence angles, using a similar approach as suggested by Horstmann et al., 2005 [1]. The resulting SAR-retrieved wind fields are compared to results of high-resolution numerical models as well as in situ measurements collected by aircrafts and buoy data. Uncertainty estimates are retrieved with respect to the local wind as well as imaging geometry. Furthermore, limitations of SAR wind retrieval at high wind speeds, in particular of the geophysical model functions (GMF) for retrieving wind speeds, will be addressed and discussed. These investigations show the influence of sea state (in particular of swell) and heavy rain on the NRCS and therefore on the wind speed retrieval as well as the limitations due to sensors.

Tropical Cyclones Features Inferred from Sar Images

Due to relatively small amount of in situ data available for the open oceans, particularly during extreme events, remote sensing techniques take an important role in the retrieval of geophysical information under such conditions. This study is based on a dataset of wide swath Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images (400 km x 400 km coverage), acquired by the European ENVISAT satellite, to observe...

Using Surface Pressure to Validate Tropical Cyclone Surface Wind Retrievals From SAR

The overall goal of this research is to improve the accuracy and usefulness of wind retrievals from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery of the sea surface under and near the centers of tropical cyclones (TCs). SAR provides unique high resolution (even sub-km-scale) imagery of the ocean surface roughness underneath TCs. However, the standard methods for interpreting this information in terms ...

Validation of Parametric Hurricane Models by ENVISAT ASAR Images

In the past decade several satellite borne synthetic aperture radars (SAR) have been put into orbit. A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) not only records the intensity of the returned signal, but also the phase history of the backscattered radar signal and is processed to high spatial resolution images. To observe the structure of tropical cyclones at the sea surface ENVISAT ASAR and RADASAT 1 Sca...

Observation of Hurricane Winds Using Synthetic Aperture Radar

In the last five years several synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of hurricanes have been acquired by the Canadian satellite RADARSAT-1 as well as the European satellite ENVISAT. Several of these SAR images have captured hurricanes of category 4 and 5. These SAR data give the unique opportunity to investigate the possibilities of SAR data for observation and forecast of hurricanes. In this s...

An ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar image of a tropical squall line compared with weather radar data

A radar image acquired by the C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) aboard the European Remote Sensing satellite ERS-2 over the coastal waters south of Singapore showing radar signatures of a strong tropical squall line (“Sumatra Squall”) is compared with coincident and collocated weather radar data. Squall line features such as the gust front, areas of updraft convergence, and rain areas are i...
